Bedwetting is completely normal at this young age, with around 1 in 5 children continuing to wet the bed up until school-age. The good news is the majority of children do outgrow bedwetting on their own without the need for intervention. Given her age and the amount she is wetting I would just hold off thinking about treatment at this point. There are a number of factors that may be contributing to the leakage. Improper fit around the leg, which can happen if the nappy is too small or too large, can result in wee escapting out the side in much the same way as you describe. I found with my own children that they needed to progress to the next size when their weight hit within 1 or 2 kg of the recommended upper weight limit. You could certainly try her in DryNites, I would advise requesting a sample off the website first just in case they are too big. Make sure she fully empties her bladder just before bedtime and avoid milk or juice in the evenings as this can stimulate the kidneys into producing more urine than normal. If you are at all concerned about the amount she is wetting at night then you should certainly pursue this further with your GP. All the best! Regards, Dr Cathrine
