Dear Danielle ,

A sudden increase in day or nighttime wetting can be the result of an underlying medical condition such as a urinary tract infection or chronic constipation so it is important to have these ruled out first. Both of these conditions are easily treatable with your daughter returning to day and nighttime dryness following treatment. Occasionally a return to wetting can result from underlying behavioural or social emotional causes. Given her age it is not surprising or unexpected for her to experience the occasional daytime accident. Young children are easily distracted and often leave it to the very last minute to go to the toilet, which often results in accidents. You can help her by reminding her that whatever she is doing will still be there when she gets back. Remind her to look out for cues that show her she needs to go to the toilet. Occasionally a return to wetting can be a sign of stress. Stress at this young age often results from sudden changes in a child’s environment. Things like starting preschool, moving house, holidays, or the birth of a sibling can all induce stress in young children. At times like these you need to try and limit the number of changes in her life. Young children take great comfort from the familiar so keep her routines as simple and familiar as possible. Lots of love and patience are always important at times like these. All the best! Regards, Dr Cathrine
