Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi Nikole – it can be incredibly frustrating when you continue to wet the bed at night despite a strong motivation to stop. It is unlikely that you will be able to stop on your own within the next month so I would strongly advise that you and your mother make an appointment with your doctor so that you can discuss the introduction of more formal interventions. Depending on the frequency of your wetting, he or she is most likely to suggest the introduction of a bedwetting alarm. These have a sensor that can be either worn inside your underpants/pajamas or on your bed. The sensor works by setting off an alarm that is designed to wake you when you begin to wet. Not all people are able to wake at first so you may need the help of your mother. The idea is that over time your body will become more accustomed to waking in response to a full-bladder. Your doctor will most likely want to run some tests first just to rule out any underlying physical cause. All the best!

Dr Cathrine
