We also ensure she isn't drinking too much before bed but certainly do not stop her drinking. We suggest she goes to the toilet before bed and sometimes does, sometimes doesn't need to go. It is always within an hour and a half of going to bed that she is up, wandering around, sometimes heading straight to the toilet, other times we have to guide her in. It seems, every second night or so she is wetting herself in between getting up and getting to the toilet. I'm not sure if we have a dual problem in having a sleep walker and toileting problem or they are related?! She has ALWAYS been a very heavy sleeper. She isn't stressed, she is a relaxed and easy going child. Thanks!
Hi Natasha, parents of children who wet the bed often comment on how ‘heavy a sleeper’ their child is. Researchers have shown that while deep sleeping certainly plays a role in bedwetting it is not the primary cause of why it happens in the first place. When the bladder is full and requires emptying it sends a message to the brain. Children who are particularly deep sleepers fail to wake in response to this message. It may be that her brain is partly responding although she is unable to wake fully. Unfortunately nasal sprays are not an absolute fix in the treatment of bedwetting with many children wetting the bed again when they stop using them. You may like to consider using a conditioning alarm, which is designed to wake your daughter when her bladder is full and needs emptying. It is important that you do not allow her to become overtired as this will make it more difficult for her to wake. All the best!
Regards,
Dr Cathrine
