I have a 14 year old daughter who still wets the bed. I buy her depend underwear for night. The problem is now she has gotten her period. She has never been yelled at or told off for wetting the bed. She is a very heavy sleeper, can you think of anything that may help us at this age. I also have a 7 year old son who still wets the bed. My 16 and 8 year olds were never bed wetters.
Bedwetting has been found to run in families so it is not unusual to find a number of siblings in the same household wetting the bed. I’m sure if you were to ask around you would find other members of either your or your husband’s family who also wet the bed as children. Often one of the best predictors of when your children will stop is the age at which other family members also stopped wetting the bed. I would recommend making an appointment with your GP or get a referral to a Nurse Continence Advisor who can discuss with you different treatment options. The most effective treatments currently available are conditioning alarms – they are successful in about 75% of cases. A sensor is placed inside the undies or absorbent pants setting off an alarm when the urine hits it – the alarm is designed to wake your daughter letting her know that she needs to get up and go to the toilet. Initially you will need to get up and help your daughter to wake especially if she is a deep sleeper. Be prepared for some setbacks as about 10-15% of children do experience some relapse. Try not to let her bedwetting interfere with her social life, encourage her to attend sleepovers when invited – there are some great stories on the DryNites website which include tips on how to disguise the fact that you are wearing absorbent pants when attending sleepovers and school camps – I am sure she will find it helpful as well as comforting to find there are other teenagers out there experiencing similar things to herself.
