Hi Anabel – the most important thing for you to understand is that your bedwetting is not your fault, and that you’re not alone. There are lots of kids who wet the bed at night and some of them are the same age as you. There are many reasons why people wet the bed, some do so because their brain has not learnt to recognise the signal sent from their bladder to wake-up and go to the toilet, others do so because their bladder cannot hold the amount of urine they produce overnight. A very deep sleep pattern is certainly a contributing factor as this makes it even more difficult for you to respond to those signals. Sometimes bedwetting or daytime incontinence can be the result of a medical condition so it is very important that you speak with your mum about making an appointment to see your GP. It can be really frustrating for mums and kids when you have to deal with constant wet beds, so we really need to think about ways to help you to stop. Bedwetting or conditioning alarms are currently the best option, although they work a little differently to how you have been using your cell phone. There are two main types of alarms. One is a body alarm with a small sensor that can be worn inside your pyjamas. The second type of alarm is a bell and pad alarm that is placed like a mat over your bottom bed sheet. This is connected to an alarm box placed at the end of your bed. Some alarms have different settings that allow you to vary the sound – sometimes a louder alarm is needed to raise a particularly deep sleeper like yourself. Before purchasing an alarm it is important that you and your mother speak with a continence specialist who will be able to advise which one is best for you. The success of the alarm is highly dependent on receiving correct instruction, as well as the level of support you receive from your mother so do not try to go it alone. It is important to stay as positive as possible during this time, while it may seem at the moment that this will go on forever, you need to know that it won’t.
Regards,
Dr Cathrine
