My daughter is nearly 16yrs old and is still wetting the bed. Over the year,s under her GP we have tried the alarm, minirin nasal spray and tablets. She hasn't used these for the past 18mths. Do you think the use of these may have caused a delay in the stopping of bed wetting. I am getting concerned at her age and is still wetting the bed. She is a very
confident outgoing girl and doesn't have a problem with sleepovers. She uses drynites
on these occassions. She can go a week with no wet beds and then wet every nite for a week. She has been checked for any physical reason and there was no problems. I was also a bed wetter but had stopped by 14 yrs old. Can you help me.
If you look at the research the most effective treatments are conditioning alarms – they are successful in about 75% of cases, unfortunately your daughter fell into the 25% that it doesn’t work with. Medications are typically viewed as a short-term solution, the bedwetting usually returns once your child is no longer taking them. It is unlikely that either treatment has prolonged her bedwetting. Bedwetting can often limit children’s social experiences so I think it’s terrific that she feels confident to attend sleepovers with friends. Clearly her confidence has a lot to do with the positive way you have handled her bedwetting and the understanding you have shown her, much of this may be related to the fact that you too wet the bed as a child. Bedwetting has been found to run in families – the fact that you wet the bed, there was a high probability that your daughter would too and this only increases if her father also wet the bed as a child. Often the best predictor of what age children outgrow bedwetting is when you yourself stopped. The fact that she is now able to go a week without wetting the bed is a good sign that her bedwetting may be coming to an end. Remember to keep encouraging her to drink water throughout the day, limit the amount of caffeine she has in her diet and fully empty her bladder each time she goes to the toilet. Dry nights will come and go until her bedwetting stops entirely, keep-up your positive attitude and provide lots of encouragement along the way.
