I need some tips on how my daughter can have sleepovers without being wet.

Hi My daughter aged 14 still wets the bed She has been asked by her friends to sleepover this weekend. She doesn't want them to find out that she has to wear bedwetting nappies. It would be embarrasing. Do you have any ideas or tips on how she could get changed before they find out??

Hi Holly – Understandably one of the most common concerns for teenagers who wet the bed is attending social events like sleepovers or school-camps. Their biggest fear typically revolves around being discovered by their peers. The good news is that many of these children are able to attend sleepovers while wearing DryNites and no-one is ever the wiser. It’s often helpful to talk to the parents where your daughter is staying before she goes and prearrange a place where she can discretely change her clothes and dispose of her DryNites. If she would prefer to keep it a secret there are things she can try like hiding them in the bottom of her sleeping bag then putting them on once everyone has gotten into bed – she can even hide a bag of lollies in the bottom to disguise the noise! Give her a plastic bag so that she can take them off in the morning and place them in there – it may mean she leaves them in her overnight bag until she gets home. A deodorant spray would also be needed. Sometimes it’s a good idea to have a practice run at home so that she feels more confident when she is with her friends. Given we are now moving into the colder months her DryNites should be easier to disguise. Wearing an oversized pyjama pant or nylon trackpant is one option – some children find wearing underpants over the top of their DryNites also reduces any sound. You could also consider using a medication designed to reduce urine production, however this is unlikely to help for this up-coming weekend. Medications should only be used in the short-term but can be an effective way to manage bedwetting for things like sleepovers. You should discuss this with your doctor. Good Luck!

Dr Cathrine
