anziety child still wetting at night

Hi I have a seven year old boy with generalized anziety and is a deep sleeper. He fills his nappy every night even with me waking him once to twice a night to go to the toliet. Because of his anziety I am restricted to how much I can try and get him to "do" or anziety will make it worse. We tried to get an xray to check things out but he freaked" and wouldn't even go into the room we have had an pee test done and all clear there. We have a nappy on every night and plastic sheet under the sheet but we change the bed from leakage about every few days. We don't have drinks after tea - 5pm and bedtime 7.30pm. I have tried the alarms but he refused to use it after the first night increasing his anziety. Dry during the day. Please any advise welcomed lost at what to try next

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi T.M., While it is highly unlikely your son’s anxiety has anything to do with his bedwetting, the treatment of children’s bedwetting can be particularly challenging when your child experiences high anxiety. Most young children experience fears of some kind however when these fears begin to infringe on daily activities then it is time to consider seeking professional help. I feel that it is important that you deal with this anxiety before you look into his nighttime wetting. Depending on where you live there are a number of anxiety clinics that specialize in working with children. You can either speak with your local GP or pediatrician or contact the New Zealand Psychological Association who can direct you to someone in your area (www.psychology.org.nz).

Dr Cathrine
