Our daughter is 3 yrs 3 mths and is completely toilet trained during the day. At night she wears pants but wets the bed everynight. She has a cup of water with dinner (around 6pm), goes to the toilet before going to bed at 7:30 and occasionally has a sip of milk at this time. We have even tried putting her on the toilet before we go to bed at 9:30 and even if she does go to the toilet, she still wets the bed. We are reluctant to put her back in nappies but then we're not sure that putting undies on her is the better option if she is waking up wet every morning. We have 2 dry nights in the past month.
It is perfectly normal for your 3-year-old daughter to be wetting at night. In fact many professionals do not even consider bedwetting to be an issue until children turn 5 years of age. The ability to control one’s bladder is a gradual process one that some children seem to master quite quickly while others take a little longer. The simplest solution to managing bedwetting is to wear an absorbent pant like DryNites – I would look at using these instead of a nappy – this saves children waking up in wet sheets as well as reducing the frustration and stress associated with multiple loads of laundry. You can also do simple things like make sure she is drinking enough during the day, only drinking water after her evening meal and that she fully empties her bladder each time she goes to the toilet – this means stopping those ‘just in case’ visits to the toilet where not much wee comes out – as this teaches the bladder to think it needs to empty more often. I would not recommend lifting her or waking her to go to the toilet as this only disrupts her sleep and does not teach her to recognise a full bladder and wake on her own. If you do wish to continue with this make sure you vary the times that you put her on the toilet so that her bladder doesn’t become conditioned to emptying at a particular time each night.
