My 2 and a half year old is refusing to wear a nappy to bed anymore. she has been day time toilet trained for 1 yr. her nappy was always dry in the morning so the other night we let her go to bed with undies. we had 5 successful nights and then suddenly she has wet the bed 7 nights in a row. She is refusing to wear a nappy of any kind to bed and there is a screaming match every night until I give in. I am due to have a baby in 2 weeks and I can't keep getting up to her to change the sheets. What can I do?
This is a tricky situation, as while you want to support your daughter in her quest for independence, you also need to minimize the amount of work this causes you particularly given the impending birth of your baby. Perhaps you could try putting her in either Pull-Ups or DryNites as these look less like nappies and may appeal to her desire to be a ‘big girl’. If the DryNites are too big for her (which is a strong possibility) then you could always see if she is interested in decorating the Pull-Ups so they look special and more appealing to wear. The fact that she has experienced a succession of dry nights is a very encouraging sign and a good indicator that she is moving toward achieving nighttime continence. It is important to keep in mind however, that the birth of a sibling can be an incredibly stressful time for young children and it is not unusual for children to regress in their development. At times like these you need to be particularly patient and understanding, providing lots of love and reassurance. Find special time to spend together where she does not need to share your attention with the baby and include her as much as you can in caring for the baby (keeping in mind that toddlers can be particularly rough and clumsy without meaning to). All the best at this very special time!
