My daughter is 6 next month and her nappy is still soaked in the morning. It's not like she is even anywhere near being night trained. What can I do?
Developing bladder control can take a little longer for some children with about 15% of children still wetting the bed by the time they start school. The majority of these children will outgrow it on their own as their body matures and becomes better able to hold on at night or wake-up in response to a full bladder. The simplest solution to managing bedwetting is to wear an absorbent pant like DryNites (I would look at using these instead of a nappy) – this saves children the embarrassment of waking up in wets sheets every morning. You can also do simple things like make sure she is drinking enough water during the day, that she doesn’t consume lots of fizzy or sugary drinks and she fully empties her bladder each time she goes to the toilet – this means stopping those ‘just in case’ visits to the toilet where not much wee comes out – as this teaches the bladder to think it needs to empty more often. If the frequency of her wetting continues or it becomes an issue for either her or yourself then it’s time to visit your GP to discuss treatment options (you can read about these on our website before going).
