Unfortunately there seems to be no quick fixes or simple solutions when it comes to bedwetting with the most common resolution being time. While underlying medical problems are rare it is generally recommended that that once your daughter turns 6 and is still wetting the bed on a regular basis you should consult with your GP. Although many treatments aren’t recommended for children until they reach 6 or 7 years of age – your GP will be able to do a thorough exam to make sure there is no underlying medical cause as well as discuss the best way to manage her bedwetting. Check that her DryNites are fitting properly as if they are too big or too small this may cause some leakage. If she is wearing Pull-Ups instead you need to replace these with DryNites as they are more absorbent and specifically designed for nighttime use. I would also check that she isn’t drinking too much before bedtime – often children do not drink much during the day when they are at school and tend to compensate for this when they get home. It’s fine for her to drink lots of water and unsweetened juices during the day although you may want to cut back toward bedtime. Make sure she fully empties her bladder before going to sleep at night and that she avoids food and drink high in caffeine as this causes the kidneys to produce more urine overnight.
