Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi Theresa, while bedwetting can be incredibly concerning for parents and grandparents alike, it is often reassuring to know that this is perfectly normal behaviour and is considered to be developmentally appropriate up to the age of 7 years. Most children who continue to wet the bed at night do so because their bodies are yet to mature to a point where they are able to store the amount of urine their kidneys produce overnight or they learn to wake in response to a full bladder. There are some underlying medical causes of bedwetting so it is always important to rule these out first. If your granddaughter has not been seen by her GP now would be a good time to do this. With respect to her her drinking, restriction of fluids is no longer recommended as this can lead to dehydration and may in fact exacerbate the bedwetting. Children who wet the bed are encouraged to drink water regularly throughout the day (say every 2 hours) tapering off in the evening – she should be consuming approximately 1 litre per day. All the best!

Regards,
Dr Cathrine
