This is a very challenging situation. While you can certainly use reward systems to encourage her to drink regularly throughout the day, this is incredibly difficult to monitor while she is at school. You could try and help her to monitor her own drinking by putting markings on her drink bottle so that she drinks to a certain point every 2-hours, with the goal of finishing the bottle by the time she comes home from school. At first you may need to engage the help of her classroom teacher. Once your daughter is able to make the connection herself between regular drinking patterns and daytime continence, hopefully this will be motivation enough for her to continue. At first you may want to introduce some tangible reward. Some children respond particularly well to reward charts that can accumulate or be “cashed-in” for a more significant prize or reward like a special day out. Remind her that these rewards are not for remaining dry but for regular drinking.

Regards,
Dr Cathrine
