My daughter is 3.5 yrs old - she has been toilet trained for 6 months(day & night). She has now started to wet the bed at night and also pants are damp during the day.

No major life events have occured for my daughter - no house move, no newborn, etc. She is confident, outgoing, healthy and was excellent at using the toilet up until 2 weeks ago. We have until tried in essence to ignore the problem, not making a big deal of it. We are having to change her pants several times a day now and bed wetting is occuring generally every second night or so. I am reluctant to reintroduce nappies and have just placed a protective mat under her bedsheet. Should I be seeing a GP to rule out infection (no smell or pain when urinating) or diabetes or seeking psychological help for her?

Dr Cathrine Answered:

It is always wise to follow-up with your doctor when children return to wetting after a significant period of continence. There are both physical and psychological reasons underlying secondary wetting so it is important that you rule any possible medical cause out first. If you receive the all-clear there, then your next step would certainly be a child psychologist. Ask your doctor to refer you to someone who specializes in child incontinence problems. Good luck!
