How do you teach your child to hold it until they wake up? Will they learn it on their own or should I be waking my daughter up in the middle of the night to go?
Unfortunately – unlike toilet training, nighttime continence is not something that can be taught. While you may be able to reduce the number of wet beds by lifting your daughter to the toilet during the night this method won’t teach her to independently wake-up and go to the toilet on her own. As her body matures she will learn to respond to the sensation of a full-bladder at night and wake on her own. The majority of children your daughter’s age will outgrow bedwetting without the need for treatment and the fact that she is only wetting the bed a couple of times a week is a very good indication that this is a phase that is coming to an end. Keep in mind the speed at which children achieve nighttime continence can vary considerably from one child to the next – it is important to stay positive and provide lots of encouragement remembering that even when she has been dry for a while accidents may still happen from time to time.
