Hi, i just starteed to let my 4 yr old sleep without nappies but i wake her every morning about 3am to go to the toilet so she wont wet the bed. Do you think its ok to do that?
Waking or lifting a child to go to the toilet certainly seems like a good way to reduce the number of wet beds, it does not however help train the bladder nor does it teach children to learn to wake on their own. Lifting can also be incredibly exhausting for the parent, making the whole bedwetting experience that more traumatic. Lifting or waking at night means children do not get the chance to get used to the signals that the bladder sends to the brain telling the child to wake-up and empty their bladder nor does the bladder have the opportunity to stretch and develop. Generally it’s best to leave children in absorbent pants at night until they have established a pattern where they no longer wet at night – about seven consecutive nights is often a good indicator – or they learn to wake on their own.

Dr Cathrine
