Lifting children while asleep to go to the toilet.

In the Huggies Email, it says not to lift children when asleep to take them to the toilet. Can you tell me why and does this mean I should not wake him and get him to walk to the toilet to do a wee before I go to bed at night? Thanks Nicole.

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi Nicole, while waking or lifting a child to go to the toilet might seem like a good way to reduce the number of wet beds, it does not help train the bladder nor does it teach children to learn to wake on their own. At this time of night the bladder will probably be only half full, or your son will still be half asleep. Children who have achieved nighttime continence are either able to wake-up independently in response to a full-bladder or have developed the bladder capacity to store urine until morning. Lifting or waking at night means your son won’t get used to these signals and the bladder won’t have the opportunity to stretch and develop.
