One of my 4 year olds has started to wet the bed about 1 year ago. During the day she goes to the toilet often. When she first toilet trained she was fine and would get out of bed and go to the toilet. But the last year she has wet the bed. She sometimes wets 2-3 times a night even though my husband gets her up to go to the toilet.
It is perfectly normal for your daughter to be wetting the bed at age 4. While it is true that some children do achieve nighttime dryness within a couple of months of being toilet trained during the day – for most it takes a little longer. During this process it is not unusual for children to experience bouts of dry nights then a period of wetting the bed again. Children wet the bed at night for a number of reasons some do so because they are unable to wake to a full-bladder, others do so because their bladder has not yet developed to a point where it can hold urine for a whole night. For these children often time is the best form of treatment. A small number of children may wet the bed because they are too sacred to get up at night to go to the toilet – if this is the case a simple night-light can solve the problem. It is not clear from your question how long your daughter was dry for – if it was for a period longer than 6 months then she is experiencing what we refer to as secondary nocturnal enuresis. If so I would recommend making an appointment with your GP first to rule out any underlying medical cause. While rare, medical conditions such as urinary tract infections and juvenile diabetes can result in a return to bedwetting. More common causes are psychological stressors like the birth of a new sibling or starting a new preschool – typically once the stressful situation is resolved the bedwetting disappears.
