my daughter is almost 4 and we got her out of night nappies at 3 really easy but now for the past 5-6 months she has been wetting the bed. i had her tested incase she had a urine infection but no. we dont give her drinks after 5pm of a day and i get up during the night to take her to the toilet but most of the time she is already wet or she wets later on, sometimes twice a night. we dont know what to do, could she have a weak bladder as when she goes to the toilet during the day she has to hold herself everytime to stop her self from wetting and its not that she waits too long, she goes frequently. she is in daycare twice a week and starts kinder next year i just want to get this sorted.
Hi Erin – there are a number of causes of bedwetting, and while urinary tract infections may contribute to a small number of cases, other possible explanations include a small bladder size or a genetic predisposition to the condition (children whose parents wet the bed are at greater risk of also doing so). Recent research also points to the absence of ADH (antidiuretic hormone) – children without ADH produce four times the amount of urine as those who have the hormone and are therefore at a greater likelihood of ‘overfilling’ their bladder at night. In general, we find that children stop wetting the bed when their bodies become better able at storing the urine overnight or they learn to wake-up on their own in response to a full bladder. If you are at all concerned about her bladder capacity you can have this checked by her GP. This is usually done by having your daughter drink, and then measuring her urine output when she says she needs to go to the toilet. Given her age, I would probably hold off on beginning any formal treatment, as there is a strong likelihood that she will outgrow this on her own. If you do want to continue lifting her at night, you should try and vary the times that you do this so as to avoid conditioning her bladder into emptying at the same time each night.

Dr Cathrine
