Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi Susi – while it is perfectly fine for your daughter to be still wetting the bed at night, I do recommend that you make an appointment with your GP to discuss her bowel movements. Uncontrolled bowel movements at night may be an indicator of chronic constipation or some other underlying medical cause so it is important to get this looked into. Bowel problems in children have also be linked to dietry intake and behavioural patterns. Children who suffer from constipation are often too busy playing to take time to use the bathroom throughout the day or have a diet which is low in fibre, and high in fat and sugar. Irregular bowel movements can also contribute to children’s bedwetting, when the rectum is full the bladder’s expansion may be restricted and therefore needs to empty more frequently.

Regards,
Dr Cathrine
