5yo girl has started wetting again when I became pregnant - could this be connected?

My daughter is almost 5 and has just recently started wetting the bed. She was fairly late to be toilet trained and even then would have the occasional accident. About 9 months ago I thought she'd finally mastered it until I got pregnant with my second child. In the last couple of months
of pregnancy she started wetting her bed again and now 5months later she's still wetting. Shes loves her little brother and I haven't noticed her to be very upset or unsettled by him arriving but I do wonder if it could be connected. Is this likely? She refuses to wear nappies (even dry nites) and gets really upset and emotional if I try to make her, which is a real problem as she wants to start spending nights at friends houses and we also spend the occasional weekend away from home and haven't been able to with her bedwetting. Do you have any tips on how to get her past this?

Dr Cathrine Answered:

When a child starts to wet the bed again after being dry for months we usually look for either a medical or emotional cause. One of the most common causes is stress. Almost any change in the environment – good or bad – can be a trigger. So the birth of her new brother may well have triggered her bedwetting. It is important that you make an appointment with your GP just to rule out any possible medical cause. Talk with your daughter to see if there is anything that is bothering her, reassure her that she is loved just as much now as before the baby came along. Parents often find the bedwetting stops when whatever is causing their child to wet goes away (or is no longer perceived as stressful) or is successfully treated. In the meantime be as patient as possible with her. You can explain to her that DryNites are designed for older girls like her and are even worn by teenagers. We cannot underestimate the embarrassment and distress wet pants can cause so it is important that you provide lots encouragement.
