My 6 year old daughter has bed wetting problems but also wets her nappy before she goes to bed.

My daughter is 6 and she has been potty trained for a year now. But has never had a dry night. But recently she hasn't been going to the toilet during the day, she has been holding it in until she is put in her nappy at night. I put her in a nappy 10 minutes before she goes to sleep. But when I put her in bed I see she has already wet it. When I ask her why she says she likes the feel of a warm wet nappy and wants to wear them 24/7. The other day she even asked if we could go down to the supermarket and buy some Huggies Junior nappies for her to wear at home. Please help

While there may be an underlying medical issue, your daughter’s behaviour may also be a reaction to something else going on in her life. It is not unusual for children to regress in their behaviour at times of stress. Common causes of stress among young children include such things as starting school, moving house, parental conflict, and the birth of a sibling, hospitalisation or peer conflict. New Zealand has experienced a number of natural disasters in recent history, which may also contribute to children feeling overly anxious or stressed. Given your daughter’s age and the frequency of her wetting I would recommend that you make an appointment so that she can be properly assessed by her GP. There may be an underlying medical issue or psychological cause, if it is the later then it would be best to be referred to a clinical child psychologist.

Dr Cathrine
