I have a 7 year old daughter who still wets every night. She was dry during the day at 2 and rarely had accidents. There is a family history spanning 3 generations of bedwetting, mailnly girls and some till their teenage years. One had underdevelope d

She drinks regualry through the day and has no problems with accidents. At night she sleeps through and doesn't wake up to go to the toilet. Her great uncle, auntie and 2 second cousins had the problem also but neither my husband or I had issues. She has never had a UTI or any other problems. Her health is good and is above average for her age at school.

Hi Rachel, due to the strong genetic link it is quite common to find a number of individuals within the one family experiencing bedwetting. Obviously there is a higher risk if parents wet the bed, however we still see familial links between cousins, aunts and uncles. If genetically determined – most children will show a spontaneous resolution around the same age that their relative achieved continence. You can however look into helping her to become dry much sooner by introducing a conditioning alarm. These currently experience the best outcomes and when paired with a regular drinking program experience some great successes and often in a relatively short time frame. The best thing for you to do is to arrange an appointment with a continence adviser who can talk about the different alarms available and design a program that will best suit your daughter. All the best!

Dr Cathrine
