twin 4yo girls, and one is wetting her pants. When is it time to worry about this?

I have twin girls who turn 4 in August. One of the girls has just starting to wear pants to bed (and going really well) and does not wet her pants through the day, And the other we are still having trouble with wet pants through the day. She went 9 days been dry a couple of months ago, but has now gone back to wetting nearly every day. When is it time to worry about her wetting her pants. She is nowhere near pants at night yet. I have had her to the doctor but they is no infection or any other reason for wetting through the day. Any advice?

Dr Cathrine Answered:

we usually do not consider daytime wetting to be a problem until after children have turned 4 years of age or reach a developmental age of 4 – this accounts for variation due to prematurity, which is typically an issue when it comes to twins. My first thought when reading this was whether your twins were premature at birth and whether she had a markedly smaller birth weight than her sister as this could account for the slight delay in toilet training. It’s great that you have already had her checked by her GP, so now it’s really just a matter of time and patience. Continue to use all the strategies you used with your other daughter – be careful not to put any additional pressure on her as this will only prolong the process and may impact negatively on her self-esteem particularly given her sister is now toilet trained. Continue to reward all successes and ignore those accidents no matter how frustrating. Keep an eye on her during the day to make sure the accidents are not occurring because she is distracted or too involved in her play – often a helpful reminder will do the trick and an explanation that whatever she is doing will still be there when she returns. Even after she is dry expect the occasional accident for sometime after – this applies to both your girls. Good luck!
