Is there any skills I could use to help my 4 & 6 to stop wetting the bed of a night?
Given the strong family history it is quite common for more than one child in the family to experience bedwetting. Perhaps either you or your husband or another close family member also wet the bed as a child – it is worth checking at what age they stopped wetting as this will give you a good indication of when to expect your girls to become dry at night. In the meantime, the simplest solution to managing their bedwetting is to use an absorbent pant like DryNites – this saves them the embarrassment of waking up in wets sheets every morning and you loads of laundry. You can also do simple things like making sure they are drinking enough water during the day, that they don’t consume lots of fizzy or sugary drinks and that they fully empty their bladder each time they go to the toilet. Stop those ‘just in case’ visits to the toilet where not much wee comes out – as this teaches the bladder to think it needs to empty more often. Some foods are known to exacerbate bedwetting – dairy products, chocolate, citrus foods – so you could try limiting these particularly in the evening. With your eldest daughter – if her bedwetting continues or it starts to bother her you should make an appointment with her GP to discuss more formal treatments.
