Ask a question now...is it ok to go to using dry nights after trying for a couple of months of knickers??

Hi a month or so ago we decided to start no nappies with my 4 year old daughter at night. She has had a couple of dry nights and has been rewarded for her efforts. However this is very rare and this week she has been wet 2 to 3 times per night. As her mum I am starting to become upset and frustrated even though I do understand she doesn't mean to. Would it be a backward step to now try dry night pants?

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi Amanda, it is perfectly fine to put your daughter back into DryNites at night. Many children prefer to wear DryNites as it gives them the confidence they need in order to go to sleep at night and reduce the anxiety associated with waking-up in wet sheets. It is helpful to remember that DryNites are simply a form of management – they do not promote nor do they stop children wetting the bed. You do not need to think of this as a backward step, rather a means of reducing the tension in a potentially stressful situation. How parents manage their child’s bedwetting can have a significant impact on a child’s self-esteem. Regardless of whether or not we understand the causes of bedwetting, dealing with constant wet sheets can be incredibly draining so no wonder you are feeling a little overwhelmed and frustrated! We generally recommend that parents leave children in their DryNites until they start to experience a run of dry nights – this is the best indicator that children are moving toward achieving permanent continence.

Regards,
Dr Cathrine
