My son turns 3 next month. We started toilet training just after Easter (March, 08). In 2 days, we had no wee accidents - toilet timing at first asking every hour but now dry during the day sleep and mostly during the night. We lift him at 10pm before we go to bed to go to the toilet. Is this necessary? However, he always poos in his undies! I can't time it...I put him on the toilet in the morning and he does in the afternoon. I've tried stickers, jelly babies, new trains etc. He has done it in the toilet there if I see a 'poo-face' but this is rare. He doesn't really go off in a corner or grunt. He just goes quiet and I often miss it. Its been four months now. Is he just being lazy or does he just not get it?
Firstly – I wouldn’t be concerned about his nighttime wetting – he is still very young so it would be unusual for him to be dry every night. Waking him at night to take him to the toilet may help in reducing the number of wet beds however this should only be done if it does not result in disrupted sleep patterns for you and him. You need to keep in mind that in most cases this approach will not teach children to wake-up on their own and go to the toilet. In regards to his poos –this is really not considered a problem until children reach 4 years of age – and is reasonably common among boys. Ideally boys should learn to urinate sitting down first as they may not want to sit to have a bowel movement. Bowel training can take longer if children do not experience regular bowel movements. One of the first things you need to do is help him to identify what it feels like when he needs to go. You could try sitting him on the toilet or potty (wherever he is more comfortable) after each meal – using rewards both for sitting as well as for pooing. Keep the tone positive as if he feels at all pressured this may result in him withholding poos which can lead to constipation.
