Hi, I am in the process of night training my 4 yr old boy. We are going pretty well, although he is not yet waking himself up. I've come online to see if there were any tips i could use and notice some advice states not to deprive of drinks of an evening

Hi Brooke – while we no longer recommend restricting fluids completely before bedtime it is perfectly fine to reduce the amount he drinks in the evenings. Water is best, as juice and milk can have a diuretic effect. The danger in restricting fluids especially in the hotter months is that it can lead to constipation, a known cause of bedwetting in children. It is important to adopt a regular drinking pattern throughout the day. At his age he should be consuming approximately 1 litre of water, which needs to be evenly spread throughout the day. You need to make sure that he drinks while at preschool as many children have a tendency to not drink throughout the day then consume the majority of their daily intake in the evenings.

Dr Cathrine
