My son is wetting the bed every night-I mean soaking it. He is dry throughout the day no problems. He has a school camp coming up & I was wondering the best way to manage the bed wetting with a minimum of embarrassment. One of his brothers wet the bed until he was 10.
Bedwetting has a genetic link so it is not usual to find a number of children in the same family wetting the bed – siblings typically outgrow bedwetting at a similar age. There are two ways you can manage his bedwetting while on school camp. Firstly, your son could wear DryNites – these have allowed many children over the years to attend sleepovers or school camps without the fear of discovery or embarrassment. It is essential that you talk to his teacher before going away so that he/she is aware of his bedwetting and can offer his or her support while away – you may find that your son is not the only one still wetting the bed and the school may already have special arrangements in place. You will need to help your son plan how he will put them on and where he will dispose of them in the morning. There is a great story on the DryNites website that talks about how a young girl hid her DryNites in her sleeping bag while away on camp and disguised the fact that she was putting them on by hiding lollies in her sleeping bag! To reduce his anxiety or apprehension (and it will make you feel better) it is a good idea to have a few ‘dry runs’ before going away. Secondly, you could try one of the medications that are used for managing bedwetting. These should only be used in the short-term and should be trialed before going away as they do not work for everyone. You will need to make an appointment with your doctor to discuss this option.
