My 4 year old son doesn't wet when wearing DryNites, only when wearing undies. How do I train him?

My son is 4, lately when he wears his dry nites to bed he is dry and has been for three weeks straight. Though when we put him to bed in his undies he wets the bed. I was wondering if you would help me work out how to stop this.

The reduction in the number of times children wet the bed is a very good indication that they are well on their way to achieving nighttime continence. It is very common for children to continue to experience infrequent wetting although I am a little perplexed as to why this occurs only on the nights where he doesn’t wear DryNites? It may be that he feels more anxious on these nights – you could discuss with him whether or not he is happy to sleep without a DryNite, making it clear that it doesn’t matter if he wets the bed. Make sure he goes to the toilet before going to sleep. Perhaps you could introduce a little bedtime ritual where you help him send a message to his brain to remind it to wake him up if he needs to go to the toilet during the night. When a child is ready to remain dry at night sometimes all they need is a little prompting. Continue to encourage healthy bladder habits – make sure he is drinking enough water during the day and avoiding food and drinks that contain caffeine or food colouring as this can increase urine production.
