HELP What do I do with my 5yr old son? He has been wetting the bed nearly every night sometimes 2 x in a night. I put him on the toilet 1-2x a night and he always does a wee. The he can still wet the bed later during the night. He tells me he likes to wet his bed because its warm! He was toilet trained at 2 yrs and I took him out of nappies at night @ 20 months ago. He has always wet the bed @ once a week but not like he is now. My other son was toilet trained at 2 and never wet his bed. It is so annoying having to wash so many sheets and sometimes its so big that he wets the doona and the pillow! I did not want to put him back in pull ups because I believed it would make it worse and that he would become lazier. What is your opinion?
It is completely normal for parents to feel tense or frustrated and at a loss when it comes to dealing with bedwetting – you are not alone! It helps to know that children who wet the bed do not do it on purpose nor does it occur due to laziness or because they are ‘naughty’. While many children do outgrow bedwetting on their own – if it a cause of concern for either you or your son then it’s time to get help. Although many treatments aren’t recommended for children until they reach 6 or 7 years of age – your GP will be able to do a thorough exam to make sure there is no underlying medical cause as well as discuss the best way to manage his bedwetting. The decision to wear DryNites or undies to bed is really up to you and your son. DryNites won’t make the bedwetting worse nor will they cure it – they are however a great way to help children and parents manage the bedwetting process.
