While perfectly normal, this must be incredibly frustrating for both you and him! Reassure him that it is very common for children as they move toward achieving permanent nighttime continence to oscillate between periods of dryness and times when they wet. His body is still learning to respond to the signals that his bladder sends to his brain telling him to wake-up and go to the toilet so if he has had a particularly active week or he becomes overtired it just makes it that little bit harder for him to respond. Many parents prefer to continue to use DryNites during this time as it reduces the stress associated with dealing with wet sheets, however if you find this causes him to become overly upset then I would try and think of an alternate solution as the added stress may contribute to his wetting. If he chooses not to wear DryNites you could try lessening your workload by making the bed up with two sets of bottom sheets (with a water proof protector in between) so when one is wet it can be stripped quickly to reveal a dry set underneath.

Dr Cathrine
