Hi Janette – It was once believed that ‘holding on’ was important for increasing bladder capacity, however practitioners no longer recommend holding on for longer periods as this can result in an increase in daytime accidents. Some doctors do recommend bladder training which involves encouraging children to increase the amount of drinks they consume during the day, to think about and recognize the sensation of a full bladder (some children make overly-frequent trips to the toilet even when their bladder is half full), learning to respond to their bladder at the first signal of wanting to go to the toilet as well as making sure children learn to fully empty their bladder each time they go to the toilet.

Dr Cathrine
