I lift my son to the toilet each night, probably 2hrs after putting him to bed and he does a pee, should I be doing this?

I have a 4½ year old boy who wee's everynight, but this is managed by using Dry Nights. I have explained to my son that it's not his fault and that it will happen in time. I have read alot of postings and it does reassure me that I'm not to worry. However, I do have one question, at the moment I lift my son to the toilet each night, probably 2hrs after putting him to bed and he does a pee, should I be doing this? I read somewhere that this doesn't help their bladder training, is this correct? My son doesn't even wake up when he's wee'd either.

Hi Mel, while waking or lifting a child to go to the toilet might seem like a good way to reduce the number of wet beds, it does not help train the bladder nor does it teach children to learn to wake on their own. As your son has only been in bed a couple of hours his bladder will probably be only half full. The fact that he is still asleep he is not conscious of the fact that he needs to void. Children who have achieved nighttime continence are either able to wake-up independently in response to a full-bladder or have developed the bladder capacity to store urine until morning. Lifting or waking at night means your son won’t get used to these signals and the bladder won’t have the opportunity to stretch and develop.
