I have a 3yr old who is only 13kg. Pull ups are just not absorbant enough at night but he won't wear nappies beause they are 'for babies'. I tried nappy-pants which he refused because of the 'baby' on the front, took them out of the pack but he remembered. Dry nites are much too big for him. I am worried about his self esteem if I have to make him wear something that he thinks is for babies. What do I do?
This certainly is a challenging situation … on the one hand we want to make sure your little boy feels confident and self-assured, while on the other hand, waking up in wet sheets every morning will be incredibly frustrating for both you and him. Have your tried him in the DryNites overnight? While I would not normally recommend this, it may be worth just trialing them for a couple of nights to see if there is any leakage due to them being too big. You could also try putting the DryNites over the Pull-Up to catch any additional urine. Another alternative is to get him to help you draw pictures on the nappy-pants so that they become more appealing to him and look less nappy-like. Some parents of children who have large urine output overnight manage this by changing their child’s absorbent pants just before they themselves go to sleep, reducing the amount of urine the pants need to hold. You can also try and reduce his urine output by ensuring he fully empties his bladder just before bedtime and limit any dairy- or citrus-based drinks, which are known to stimulate the kidneys. All the best!

Dr Cathrine
