My boy seems to have good times and times with his bed wetting he doesn't tend to wet the bed when he is at someone else's house or when it is warmer weather. why is this? what can i do? i have tried rewards for dry nights and that works but as soon as the rewards stop the bed wetting starts again how else can i help this because it starts to get costly in the end with all the rewards.
It is not unusual for parents to talk about their child experiencing dry nights when away on holidays or in warmer weather. Often on these occasion children seem to be more alert or sleep less soundly finding it easier to wake and respond to a full-bladder. Rewards are a little tricky when it comes to bedwetting, as children typically have no control over what is happening. You may be lucky and experience a few dry nights but rewards do not in themselves teach your child to respond to a full bladder. By all means praise your son for a dry bed or if he wakes to use the toilet but it is important that you explain to him that when he does wet it is not his fault. Praise and encouragement are important for fostering positive self-esteem but are better targeted toward behaviour that he can directly control – like changing his sheets for you, going to the toilet before bedtime or making sure he drinks enough water during the day. It is important to keep in mind not all children outgrow bedwetting on their own – some children benefit from a little help on the way. Given his age it would be a good idea to make an appointment with your GP so that he/she can do a thorough exam as well as discuss different treatment options with you.
