5yo who stays dry only when we wake him to pee - does this mean he is not ready for toilet training?

My son turns 5 in Dec. At the moment we are trying jocks at night. However we are waking him up and taking him to the toilet. It's only on the nights we do this that he is dry. Does this mean he is not ready to try night training? His dad was a bedwetter. We are thinking about getting an alarm on the bed. Is he too early for this.

Boys bedwetting (4-10 y) · Asked by lynn over 3 years ago

Dr Cathrine Answered:

it’s not unusual for 5-year-old children to still be wetting the bed at night with approximately 1 in 5 children continuing to do so and the majority of these are boys. As I’m sure you are probably aware, bedwetting runs in families so if both parents wet the bed you have a 7 in 10 chance that your child will also wet the bed, this reduces to about 4 in 10 if only one parent experienced bedwetting as a child. When it comes to familial links we typically find children stop wetting the bed around a similar age to their parent(s). Have a chat with your husband to see how old he was – if you’re not prepared to wait it out until he outgrows the bedwetting on his own you can always look into the conditioning alarm although I would recommend holding off until he shows a definite interest in becoming dry as motivation to become dry is one of the key determinants effecting success. In the meantime I would hold off on waking him at night – while it may result in fewer wet beds it will not teach your son to wake on his own and it may condition his bladder into emptying at the same time each night.
