My 5 year old son has been bed wetting, 3 or 4 times a week, since the age of about 4. He also has 'accidents' during the day where he knows he needs to go to the toilet but doesn't quite make it in time. I am considering using drynites pajama pants at night but was wondering at what point I should consider taking him to see a doctor.
It is not unusual for children to experience accidents during the day for a number of years after they have been toilet trained – this typically occurs when they are highly engaged with an activity or distracted by friends. Gently remind your son that whatever he is doing will still be there when he returns from the toilet. It is estimated that about 15% of 5-year-olds wet the bed – the majority of these being boys. In fact there is probably at least 2 to 3 other children in your sons kindergarten class who also wet the bed on a regular basis. Bedwetting is not viewed as a concern until a child has reached six or seven years of age and even then it depends on the frequency with which it occurs. Thankfully most children will outgrow bedwetting on their own – for those who don’t there are a number of treatments available to help them on their way. The decision of when or whether to speak with your doctor is ultimately up to you and your son – if his bedwetting increases in frequency or results in feelings of inadequacy or frustration then it is time to explore possible treatments to help him stop. I would definitely recommend DryNites as a way to manage his bedwetting – they will ensure he doesn’t wake up cold and wet as well as helping you to keep all the washing under control!
