Son not waking up. Time for bed alarms?

I have managed with the attitude that one day it will happen & not to worry about it. My son is a very deep sleeper and I suppose I am waiting for him to wake up himself & go to the toilet. I did wake him up for a while and even no night undies for a while (1-2yrs ago)but it was too hard on me - not him. My question would be....At nearly 8yrs do you think I should try something eg. the bed alarm or just ride it out for another year?

Dr Cathrine Answered:

the decision to pursue treatment is really up to you and your son. About 15% of 8-year-old children who wet the bed will achieve nighttime continence by the end of the year without the need for treatment – this is encouraging – however it also means that 85% of children will continue to wet the bed if treatment is not introduced. Your doctor will probably recommend you start with a conditioning alarm, as this seems to have the best success rates. A sensor is placed inside his DryNites setting off an alarm when the urine hits it – the alarm is designed to wake him up, letting him know that he needs to get up and go to the toilet. As he is a sound sleeper he will probably need you to respond to the alarm first then wake him so that they can turn it off. The time it takes for children to stay dry varies from child to child and relapses are common so patience is the key to success – and you’ve already demonstrated that you’ve got lots of that!
