he also frequently will pee on the carpet or on the floor. what's going on? he refuses to wear pull ups and gets very angry when it is suggested
Hi Sheila, what you are describing is secondary bedwetting. This is where children have been dry at night for at least 6 months or more and then return to wetting. There are a few different explanations for secondary bedwetting some of which are medical/physical and include such things as chronic constipation and urinary tract infections, so it is very important that you have your son seen by his GP first so you are able to rule these out. Psychological stress is also a potential cause of secondary bedwetting. Common stressors for young children include such things as starting preschool or school, difficulties with peers, hospitalization and family disharmony or divorce. Typically children will stop wetting when whatever is causing the stress is resolved, however when the bedwetting is ongoing children can benefit from speaking with a child psychologist. Discuss this with your GP once you have completed all necessary tests.
Regards,
Dr Cathrine
