He remained dry in undies for up to 2 weeks, but then started wetting, so we put the DryNights back on. He can go 5-10 days dry in his nappy, but the first night he sleeps in his undies, he wets. Then he wets for the next 2 nights, after which we get too tired, and put the nappy back on. And the cycle continues – dry in nappy – wet in undies. Should we pesist with the nappy off, so he learns to feel and trust his bladder? Or continue to rotate nappy on/nappy off? He would prefer to sleep without the nappy. Your assistance would be appreciated.
Hi Jane – as frustrating as this is, it really is a very encouraging sign that your son is moving toward achieving nighttime continence. While some children stop wetting then never wet again, the majority of young children will oscillate between periods of being dry and return to wetting again as the travel the road to permanent continence. If you are happy to cope with occasional wet sheets then you can certainly get rid of the DryNites. While there has been some debate surrounding the use of absorbent pants – there really is no convincing research support to show that these prolong the bedwetting process. Nighttime wetting typically happens when children are asleep and are not in conscious control over their bladder, making it difficult to train a child at night. Whether you decide to use DryNites or not I would recommend that you stick to either undies or absorbant pants so to ensure some level of consistency. Reassure your son that you understand that none of this is his fault, and while it is fine to get excited when he wakes-up dry, reassure him that when he does wake-up wet that this too is OK and with time he will become permanently dry.
Regards,
Dr Cathrine
