After 2 months of mostly dry nights, my 5 year old son has regressed and is wetting his bed once, or even twice a night. We have used star charts for rewards, he is proud of himself when he is dry overnight. He always empties his bladder before bed.
I use the 'wee mats' on his bed and sometimes he pushes them aside and wees on the sheet. Sometimes I get angry because I feel like he is doing it on purpose. Will it ruin all the effort we have made so far to put him back in a Drynite nappy? Help please!

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi Liz – as frustrating as this may be please be reassured that this is perfectly normal. As children move toward achieving permanent nighttime continence it is common for them to waiver between periods of dryness than return to wetting again. It is not unusual for children to start wetting again at times of sickness or if they become overtired as this makes it more difficult for them to wake in response to a full bladder. The decision of whether or not to return to using DryNites is really up to you. Why there has been some debate surrounding the use of absorbent pants – there really is no convincing research support to show that these prolong the bedwetting process. If you are at all concerned about the sudden increase in wetting then I would certainly recommend that you have him checked by your GP.

Regards,
Dr Cathrine
