My son is 5 1/2 and was toilet trained at night around 4.5. We went on a family holiday in May 07 which we all enjoyed, however, when we got home he began to wet his bed at night. I cannot pin point an event which may have triggered this, but it is over 12 months and he still continues to have wet nights. He has been in pull ups since May 07 with no protest, and this wetting is very hit and miss (I am recording). Liam will turn 6 in Nov, what can I do to help him overcome this?
If my Math is right he was dry at night for a period less than 6 months so he would still be considered to be experiencing primary enuresis. It is not unusual for children to experience a period of dryness and then start wetting the bed again – it may just be a coincidence that in coincided with you returning from holidays although overtiredness can play a role. You mention there being no apparent pattern to his bedwetting – while this may be the case, I wonder if it typically happens at times when he is more tired or has consumed a particular type of food or drink. Some children experience nocturnal incontinence as a result of food allergies or intolerances to dairy or certain food colourings. While he is still reasonably young it is probably worth making an appointment with your GP just to check there is no underlying physical cause to his bedwetting. In terms of treatment – I would hold off awhile as most children his age will outgrow it on their own, particularly in cases where bedwetting occurs less frequently. In the meantime continue using DryNites to help manage his bedwetting – these are more suitable to Pull-Ups, which are designed more specifically for daytime use.
