My son is 5 and a half and up until recently has been wearing pull-ups every night as he wets the bed every night. He recently "begged" to try wearing "jocks" to bed and so I decided to give it a try. We've had about 3 dry nights but the rest have been wet and I'm not sure whether by having too many "unsuccessful" nights is going to shatter his self esteem/confidence. He doesn't want to go back to pull-ups, but I'm not sure whether having too many wet nights is worse for him. Appreciate your thoughts.
Hi M. B., the way parents manage children’s bedwetting can often make or break a delicate situation. It really is a personal decision as to whether or not to use DryNites. DryNites are an effective form of management not treatment. While there has been some debate about the use of absorbent pants, the general consensus is that DryNites neither speed up nor prolong the bedwetting process. In much the same way – experiencing wet beds should not shatter his self-confidence so long as you continue to reassure him that this is in no way his fault and that with time he will become dry. We typically recommend that parents hold off until their child has reached 7 years of age before they consider treatment options due to the high spontaneous cure rate up until then. However given his strong motivation to become dry you could certainly think about introducing a conditioning alarm a little sooner as this should help him to achieve his desired outcome. It is important that you meet with a continence advisor before embarking on the conditioning program as the more support you receive the greater the likelihood of a successful outcome – all the best!

Dr Cathrine
