Hi our 3.5 year old boy has just started to wet his bed. What is it we should do?

He has gone for months now with no nappy and a dry bed. But for the last 3 nights he has been wetting his bed. The first night he woke upset early morning then the next 2 nights he hasnt realised til he wakes in the morning.

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Hi Susna, while it is not particularly unusual for a 3-year-old to be wetting the bed at night, what you do need to think about is what has resulted in this change. A return to wetting after an extended period of dryness should always be investigated further. My 3-year-old son also experienced a run of wet nights following 12 months of being dry, it turned out that he had tapeworms. Following treatment he reverted back to experiencing consistent dry nights. Young children may wet the bed if they become particularly over-tired, shifting his bedtime forward even ½ hour may make a big difference. Stress can also be a contributing factor – it is not unusual, for example, for children to start wetting the bed again when they begin child care or preschool. Other indicators of stress may be sudden change in behaviour, night-tremors or difficulties with separation.

Regards,
Dr Cathrine
