Ask a question now... My son is 10 and continues to wet bed......

Hi, my 10 year old boy continues to wet the bed. We saw an enuresis specialist and used an alarm, however within 2-3 months of total dryness at night, has returned to his full on bed wetting. He is an extremely heavy sleeper which has also made it difficult. Self esteem wise, he has rejected going back to an alarm system. He is always dry at sleep overs etc. Please do you have any advice. He has used minerin spray specifically for sleeps overs but this medication scares me. He has stayed dry during sleepovers without minerin spray.

Hi Angela – It is not unusual for parents of children who wet the bed to comment on the fact that their children are able to stay dry when attending sleepovers or on holidays. While there is no clear medical explanation for this it has been suggested that children may sleep less soundly when away from home and therefore wake more easily in response to a full bladder. While Minirin is fine for short-term use it does not offer a permanent cure. It may help if you explain to your son that about 10-15% of children experiencing some relapse after using a conditioning alarm – when this happens you need to reintroduce the alarm treatment although you will find that he becomes dry much quicker the second time around. For some children it can take up to 3 cycles of treatment so it is important not to give up if it at first it does not seem to work. Some alarms have different settings that allow you to vary the sound – sometimes a louder alarm will raise a particularly deep sleeper. Others include a vibration option while others can even be programmed so that children wake up to the sound of a voice recording rather than an alarm (Malem Recordable Alarm).

Dr Cathrine
