Sometimes my 5yo wakes up by himself but instead of going to the toilet he'll just cry / scream hysterically until he wets himself. How can I help him to wake himself up and go to the toilet quietly?

My son is 5 years old. Every night, I have to wake him up twice to go to the toilet otherwise he will almost certainly wet himself. Sometimes he wakes up by himself but instead of going to the toilet he'll just cry / scream hysterically until he wets himself. How can I help him to wake himself up and go to the toilet quietly ?

Dr Cathrine Answered:

Unfortunately there is nothing we can do to make a child wake-up on their own, this is why we do not recommend that parents lift or wake their child during the night. While this method may help in reducing the number of wet beds, it should only be done if it does not result in disrupted sleep patterns for you or your child. In most cases this approach will not teach children to wake-up on their own. You also need to make sure that you vary the times this is done otherwise you can condition his bladder to empty at the same time each night. The first thing you need to do is to discover what is disturbing him at night. Choose a calm moment during the day to talk to him about why he is getting so upset during the night. Some children may wet the bed because they are too scared to get up and go to the toilet on their own – to avoid this make sure that he has easy access to the toilet and there is a light left on. Check that he is fully awake when this happens as some children may cry out during a dream. If this continues you should make an appointment to speak with your GP.
